After completing an MSc and PhD in Applied Meteorology at the University of Birmingham Anthony joined the Met Office in 2001 as a research scientist modelling ice accretion on overhead lines and winter hospital admissions for the NHS.

Combining a sound academic background in meteorology, climatology and statistics with skills in GIS he’s developed a number of innovative solutions and offered specialist technical input to challenging projects in the transport sector over the past 15 years. He’s modelled lightning risk and poor rail adhesion, redesigned observing networks and conducted much of the underpinning research and development for route based forecasting. He successfully implemented a combined operational and climatological gritting route optimisation capability and can accurately predict likely savings prior to a full analysis. He’s developed a GIS-based approach to define spread widths more consistently and accurately across extensive treatment networks.
